JT3 and the Hoyas Struggle
SOUTH: (15)Florida Gulf Coast 78 (2)Georgetown 68: The Georgetown Hoyas annual March debacle is complete. The Big East behemoth has made a routine of leaving their hearts at home when the pressure of the NCAA’s is on. Little known upstart Florida Gulf Coast etched it’s name in NCAA tournament lure by adding to the Hoyas pain.
Lobos, One & Done
Day one of the mens NCAA basketball tournament is in the books. My bracket meanwhile, is already in the garbage.
There haven’t been many days in NCAA mens basketball history that can match up to this one. Two number `15 seeds triumphed over heavy favorites. Norfolk St. upended a veteran and supremely talented (on paper anyway) Missouri squad. If that wasn’t enough to bust a bracket, Lehigh earned their first ever NCAA tournament win over none other than Duke. Number 14 seeded St. Bonaventure joined in the fun by dismissing previously red-hot Florida State. To add to the madness, Ohio (University not State) proved to Michigan that the school in Columbus isn’t the only team to fear in the Buckeye State. The Bobcats took out the 4th seeded Wolverines to bring more bracket frustration to the masses. Some may have predicted upsets heading into the tournament. Belmont was a shiek selection to take out 3rd seeded Georgetown. ESPN and CBS analysts alike exclaimed on selection Sunday that the Bruins were a team to watch. Georgetown led virtually wire-to-wire and sent Belmont packing. Long Beach St. was another vogue pick to make a run as a 12 seed, New Mexico was having none of that. Nope, instead Norfolk St. and Lehigh stole Cinderella’s slippers. I’m willing to bet that no sane person on God’s Green Earth picked that tandem. That in a nutshell is what makes March mad. This tournament annualy brings attention to schools and towns in this country that rarely see this type of glory. It made George Mason and Jim Laranaga household names during their miraculous run to the Final Four in 2006. It made Shaka Smart and Virginia Commonwealth stars last season. The Spartans and Mountain Hawks added their names to the lure today. I’m sure that there is more madness to come this weekend. Can’t wait.
